Celebrating Impact During AmeriCorps Week

Every year, 250,000 Americans choose to serve their communities through service with AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps members make an incredible impact helping communities manage COVID-19 response, ensure students stay on track to graduate, combat hunger and homelessness, respond to natural disasters, fight the opioid epidemic, help seniors live independently, support veterans and military families, and much more.

During AmeriCorps Week we recognize the commitment of the millions of Americans who have chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps and encourage others to follow in their footsteps of service. To help celebrate this week, we asked our members to tell us about a time when they realized they were making an impact during their service. Here is a small collection of responses.

Erika, Early Learning Corps Tutor

“I realized I was making an impact when a student was excited to show me that they could write their name without my help. It’s an amazing feeling to know how much you mean to them and to watch them grow.”

Taylor, Home Energy Member

“ Just last week, we talked with a client who would be able to afford to keep her house because of the work we were going to do for her, and I was honored to be a part of that.”

Abbi, Community Forestry Member

“When I was in the field my first week and surveying trees in my childhood neighborhood, an old neighbor recognized me and called me over to discuss the trees in their yard. They were so thankful that I was able to put in a few requests for them and mentioned how our work is going to last for decades.”

Vicki, Math Corps Tutor

“ Students tell me how they went from failing to getting A's and B's and I have received messages from parents telling me me how thankful they are to have me help their child.”

Lyla, Reading Corps Tutor

“I realize the impact each time one of my students has an ‘aha moment’ while doing something difficult, and suddenly everything clicks into place. I realize it when I see just how excited the kids are to learn, even when it’s something we do every single day!”

Jeffrey, Recovery Corps

“I realized I was making an impact when I started reaching out at my location and people started calling me back. Having someone else who is going through their recovery journey call you being excited to tell you about their progress really drives that feeling home.”
